Majli - Home To The 22 Neo-Vaishnavite Monasteries

World’s largest river island, Majuli is home to 22 neo-Vaishnavite monasteries founded in the 15th and 16th centuries by scholar-reformer-saint Sankaradeva, who also initiated deeply beloved forms of music, dance and theatrical performance. HolidayIQ traveller Shilpz S from Mumbai shares, “Satras are monasteries founded by the Vaishnavite saints, primarily started Sankaradeva. These have male disciples residing, and practicing Vaishnavism, immersed in Assamese culture. The Satras actively participate in the dramas and dances-a window in the cultural part of the place. Also on the must do list is a visit to the tribal Mishiing village, where you see the stilted bamboo houses , with ladies weaving handlooms outside the doors. Mishiing weaving in the traditional black and red colors is highly appealing.”
