Jhumur Dance

Attributed to the tea tribes of Assam, Jhumur is another folk dance of Assam. Jhumur is usually performed by a group of young girls holding each other’s waist and dancing in synchronization to the beats of Madal (a two-headed hand drum). The dancers themselves sing in perfect harmony. The dance is sometimes performed as a ritual to worship god, sometimes for lovemaking and sometimes as a prayer for rainfall.
