The one-of its-kind Ambubachi Mela held at the famous Kamakhya temple in Guwahati is a four-day affair. This festival marks the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Sakti. Held in mid-June, Ambubachui Mela receives thousands of tantricsand sages from all across the country.
As it happens, the door of the Kamakhya temple along with the gates of all other temples, prayers halls and prayers rooms in Assamese homes remain closed for the first three days, considered to be the menstrual period of the Goddess. After cleansing happens on the fourth day, the doors of the sanctum sanctorum reopen followed by the doors of others temples.
